Kaci Smart of Columbia College recently hired me for an event photography assignment at the college’s Fall Formal. Kaci will often hire me for events because of my expertise with low-light photography. This event was such an occasion. The formal took place in a dimly lit ballroom at the Columbia Country Club. For this photo, I used a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV camera with a Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM. The camera has a low noise sensor which is important for low-light photography. The lens has built-in stabilization which helps take a sharper image when using a slow shutter speed. To add light to the scene, I used Adorama’s Flashpoint Zoom Li-on X R2 round flash unit with the optional magnetic diffuser attached. I shot the scene handheld with a shutter speed of 1/60 of a second and let the flash illuminate the room. Here’s the resulting photo with the students doing a line dance at the formal.
